Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, told parliament this Wednesday (16-11) that the train which failed to start one day after being inaugurated on the Beira-Dondo route in Sofala province, is now circulating normally, and that new trains of the same sort will be introduced in other provinces in the coming months.

“Today I had information that the problems with the locomotive have been rectified, and it is now in good condition,” Magala said in a parliamentary Questions to the Government session.

The minister also reiterated that investment in mass transport, and especially in rail, would help solve the country’s chronic transport deficit.

In this context, the government would, through the company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), inaugurate ten new passenger transport routes to various destinations in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza.

These are routes linking Maputo’s Central Station and Matola-Gare, the towns of Boane and Marracuene, and also Ressano Garcia (Maputo province) and the district of Chókwè, in Gaza.

Magala guaranteed that the government would also inaugurate new routes in the north of the country. “In the next three months, we will introduce Lichinga-Cuamba, Nampula-Cuamba and Nacala-Nampula [routes],” he said.

According to Magala, to improve sustainability, the executive is considering introducing new transport services powered by either gas or electricity.
