Bidvest workers allege violation of labor standards at Moatize mines

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Employees of Bidvest, a subcontracted company of Vulcan for the maintenance and repair of air conditioning equipment, claim that their employer is breaching regulations for the closure of the company following the end of the agreement with the mining company in the Moatize district of Tete province.

They reached out to “Notícias” to explain that instead of providing termination letters to all employees, the company issued transfer documents to some workers, assigning them to districts across the country where the company does not operate as a way to bypass the obligation to provide compensation.

“Our agreement with Vulcan ended on March 20. We haven’t received our last month’s salary yet, and they want us to return our badges before paying us. If we return them, we won’t have access to the mine anymore, and there’s no guarantee that they will pay us,” one of the workers complained.

The workers also mentioned that the company is based in the Maputo province and does not have a presence in Tete where they can assert their rights.

On the other hand, Faustino Matias, a Bidvest supervisor, expressed regret to “Notícias” about the company closing in Tete, leaving many families without a source of income. He assured that the workers will receive their last month’s salary by April 13. However, he stated that they will not receive compensation as their contracts were fixed-term.

“There may be unrest because the contract we had with Vulcan was below the required standards, and we ended up facing difficulty in paying salaries. But they will be paid, then they will return their badges and be demobilized,” he affirmed.

Matias also mentioned that Bidvest provided services to Vulcan for two years and could not continue as they opted not to renew the contract with this subcontractor.
