The National Association of Mozambican Bakers (Amopão) warned on Monday that a rise in the price of bread is “unavoidable” in view of the increase in the cost of wheat flour, going on to ask the government to relieve the tax burden on importing and processing this raw material.
“An increase in the price of bread is inevitable unless the government takes action on the cost of importing and processing wheat flour,” president of Amopão Victor Miguel told Lusa.
The official said the price for wheat flour rose today, with the 50-kilogram bag now costing 2,250 meticais (€32.00) against the previous 1,950 meticais (€27.70).
“The situation is complicated for bakers: we are paying more for wheat but selling bread for less,” he pointed out.
The solution, he continued, could consist of the government compensating the mills that import and process wheat flour, so that the rising cost is not reflected in the final price paid by consumers.
The last increase in the price of bread was in 2021, when the minimum price of regular bread was changed to six meticais (€0.085) and the maximum price to 12 meticais (€0.17).
Mozambican cities have in the past seen violent demonstrations and destruction of public and private property following increases in the price of basic necessities, including bread, first in 2008 and again in 2010.
