Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Police (PRM) says it has launched an investigation into an attempted kidnapping, occurred on Thursday, of a local businessman in the northern province of Nampula.

PRM spokesman Zacarias Nacute told reporters this Friday that the force is working to solve the case that caused a major social unrest in the town of Nampula.

The kidnappers, driving a car, were carrying firearms which they fired at the scene.

“Thanks to the victim’s resistance, the kidnappers were unable to remove him from inside the cafeteria where he was staying and, and in attempt to intimidate him, one of the criminals fired an AKM-47 machinegun and then they got into their vehicle and sped off.

The police was called to the scene to collect evidence and testimony of the witnesses, and are currently working to locate and arrest these individuals,” said the PRM spokesman in Nampula.

The coffee shop where the incident took place is located in one of the main avenues in the town of Nampula, where several private and public institutions are established, including the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

Witnesses at the scene assure that it was a very quick and unexpected action.

Throughout last night, on social networks were busy with many citizens condemning the act and warning for greater vigilance, besides demanding a robust response from the authorities, to prevent kidnappings to spread in the region.
