Africa-Press – Mozambique. A Mozambican businessman linked to the automobile sector was kidnapped on Friday by unknown men, the police spokesman in the city of Maputo, Leonel Muchina, told Lusa this Saturday.
“I confirm the occurrence of this kidnapping, but we are still investigating the details related to the event,” said Muchina, without providing further details.
Another source told Lusa that the victim was kidnapped in the Zimpeto neighbourhood, suburbs of Maputo, in the south of the country.
More than three weeks ago, a 26-year-old Portuguese-Mozambican woman was kidnapped by three armed men in Maputo, as she was leaving home, and remains in captivity to this day.
On Thursday of last week (November,)) Mozambican police detained two men red-handed when they intended to kidnap a businessman in the capital.
The kidnappers were in possession of a list of people to be kidnapped, the corporation reported.
Two vehicles were also seized from the two men and “images of several victims of kidnappings that would occur after the execution” of the kidnapping frustrated by the Mozambican police on Thursday were obtained.
Also on Thursday, police said that businessman Juneide Lalgy, linked to a company with a fleet of trucks and owner of a football club in Mozambique, was the target of a chase by unknown people, in the city of Matola, Maputo province, having managed to escape to his company.
Some Mozambican cities, mainly the provincial capitals, have been affected again since 2020 by a wave of kidnappings, mainly targeting businesspeople or their families.
The Prime Minister of Mozambique, Adriano Maleiane, announced in parliament last May that the agents who will work in a special unit to combat kidnappings that affect the country’s main cities have already been selected.
According to a report presented by the head of the Mozambican Government at the time, since 2021, 28 cases of kidnapping have been registered in Mozambique, of which, “15 have been fully clarified”.
