Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has admitted that the weight of expectation surrounding the club’s quest for a second CAF Champions League title is placing increased pressure on his players this season.

Reflecting on Sundowns’ continental campaign, Cardoso acknowledged that the constant focus on winning the club’s second Champions League crown has become an ever-present topic, both within and outside the team.

According to the Portuguese tactician, the expectation follows the players everywhere they go and is repeatedly raised during media engagements.

“There’s increased permanent pressure on my players regarding the Champions League and cups,” Cardoso said.

“As much as they are professionals and experienced and should deal with it, it’s not that simple because, in the end, we’re all human beings.”

Sundowns, who last lifted the prestigious continental trophy in 2016, have consistently been regarded as one of Africa’s strongest sides in recent years.

Their domestic dominance and regular appearances in the latter stages of the Champions League have only heightened calls for the club to reclaim the title and add a second star to their badge.

Cardoso revealed that the question of winning another Champions League title has become unavoidable, featuring prominently in press conferences both at home and on the road.

“In all press conferences of the Champions League before and after, even when we go abroad, there’s always that question of when are we going to put the second star on our badge,” he added.

Despite the mounting pressure, Sundowns remain focused on their objective of translating consistent performances into continental success.

Cardoso’s comments highlight the mental challenge his squad faces as they balance high expectations with the realities of a demanding Champions League campaign, where fine margins often separate success from disappointment.

As the tournament progresses, Sundowns will be hoping that experience, resilience and tactical discipline can help them overcome the psychological burden and move one step closer to achieving their long-awaited second CAF Champions League triumph.
