Chapo inaugurates new INATRO headquarters

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday inaugurated the new headquarters of the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO), the body responsible for road safety, for issuing driving licences and vehicle number plates, and for supervising driving schools.

According to a note from the President’s office, the new building is a “strategic investment for modernising and improving the quality of the services provided to citizens”.

The investment, he said, results from the recognition of the essential role of Inatro in regulating, inspecting and supervising road transport, in the name of safety and efficient mobility.

Chapo claimed that, despite advances made since the creation of Inatro in 2021, challenges such as long queues, discrepancies in how citizens are treated, and lack of clarity in procedures, still persist.

He was concerned at corruption and “excessive human interference” in Inatro services. Chapo believed that eliminating corruption involves “moving urgently to the digitalisation and automation of services”.

The President expressed concern at the number of fatal accidents on Mozambican roads. In 2024, the country recorded 687 accidents which caused 825 deaths – a nine per cent increase on the figure for 2023.

Chapo announced the implementation of a Road Safety Action Plan “with specific measures for the most critical areas”, backed up by strengthened inspection and civic education.

It is also necessary, he stressed, to educate motorists and pedestrians on the need to observe basic traffic rules.
