Africa-Press – Mozambique. The president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), and of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, has said that, for the Frelimo party, the last elections “have already passed” and asked for the definition of strategies to “strengthen political action”.
“Because, in Frelimo, the 2023 [local] and 2024 [general] elections have already passed and we are looking forward,” Daniel Chapo said on Saturday when addressing the national committee of the Association of Combatants of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN), held on Saturday and Sunday in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo.
“Therefore, this third session of the ACLLN national committee must be a moment of deep and frank debate and reflection on the new strategies that Frelimo must adopt to strengthen political action, in order to allow for more dynamic and results-oriented governance for the benefit of the Mozambican people,” Chapo continued.
Speaking in his capacity as president of Frelimo and of the ACLLN, Chapo said that the two-day meeting of the Frelimo veterans would analyse not only the life of the ACLLN, but also “of the party and the country, as well as to envisage actions to achieve future victories”.
“We will also elect the new secretariat of the national committee as part of the preparation and organisation of our victory in the 2028 and 2029 elections,” Chapo pointed out regarding the upcoming electoral processes in the country.
Nonetheless, Daniel Chapo also mentioned again the almost five months of post-election social unrest in the country, which since October have caused around 400 deaths in clashes with the police, in addition to looting and destruction of public and private property, “at a time when the country is gradually recovering from the instability created by violent, illegal and criminal demonstrations”.
“They showed the new way in which the enemies of the Mozambican people act, having caused mourning and suffering in families, destruction of public and private property and the installation of a climate of disorder and terror, as well as disrespect for institutions and human rights,” he said.
“It was clear that the demonstrations were not caused by the election results, since the victory of Frelimo, and its presidential candidate, was clear and the journalists and all the competing parties were able to understand that this is the only true electoral truth,” Chapo stressed.
On March 23, Daniel Chapo and Venâncio Mondlane, the defeated presidential candidate who does not recognize the results of the October general elections and who called for post-election protests, met for the first time and committed to ending the violence. They met again on May 21 to agree an agenda to pacify the country.
