Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, speaking in his capacity as President of the ruling Frelimo Party, warned on Sunday that “we are going through a moment when neocolonial interests have been stepping up a global strategy to weaken and overthrow the liberation parties of southern Africa”.
Speaking in Maputo at the close of a meeting of the National Committee of the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN), he claimed that this strategy involves “creating internal divisions and splits which sometimes culminate in the appearance of other parties in the region”.
“Our veterans, who sacrificed so much to liberate this country”, said Chapo, “need to remain attentive so that, just as in the past, they can today be on the front line in the struggle against trends in this new international political order which affect our liberation parties”.
He was sure that, despite the attempts to defeat the liberation parties, Frelimo “remains indivisible and victorious”.
He stressed that the Frelimo leadership is open to approaches from party members “to broach relevant questions of the internal life of our party, the country and the world”.
In this way, Frelimo could create “a single force for us to continue winning in future elections, win the battle against poverty, bring balanced and sustainable development, and reduce social inequalities”.
The meeting had discussed the financial sustainability of ACLLN, and Chapo warned “it is fundamental that all members should pay their membership fees”.
But that would not be enough to cover the Association’s expenses, and so the members should be willing to make additional contributions and “to strengthen our capacity to invest in income-generating projects, maximising the immense potential and business opportunities in agriculture, fisheries, industry, tourism, mining, transport and other sectors”, stressed Chapo.
He praised the initiative to set up a projects and investment unit within the ACLLN Secretariat, “to encourage the association’s business initiatives”.
Chapo said participants were leaving the meeting “with a common vision of the general situation of the party and of the country”, including the need to strengthen Party discipline “which involves strict observance of the principles and values enshrined in the Frelimo statutes and respect for the decisions of Party bodies, regulations and directives, particularly for inner-party elections”.
The principle of “Unity-Criticism-Unity” remains the method for guiding the activity of party members and bodies, added Chapo, “but should be understood as criticism, not of individuals, but of behaviour that deviates from the political line of our party and of ACLLN”.Mozambique:
