Africa-Press – Mozambique. Eighteen localities in the Chicualacuala district, in the Gaza province, do not have access to mobile phone services, a fact that hampers local development. To access this service, the population of these communities needs to travel between 40 to 50 kilometers on foot or by carts to the headquarters of administrative posts or neighboring localities.
The population, eager to use mobile phones, also points out call drops, busy network signal, and weak internet signal as other constraints that hinder communication.
According to the district administrator, Cacilda Banze, the lack of mobile phone signal concerns not only the population but also the district authorities who need to stay constantly informed about the situation of the communities and the provision of social services.
However, it is known that there are ongoing efforts with the Provincial Directorate of Transport and Communications to persuade mobile phone operators to expand services to more localities, in order to prevent the population from traveling long distances to maintain communication.
