Africa-Press – Mozambique. Residents of Chiúre Velho Administrative post, in Chiúre district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, on Thursday faced moments of panic, following a terrorist incursion.
According to local sources, cited by the independent daily “O País”, the incursion took place in the morning, when a group of terrorists opened fire against the residents, and then burned down a police station and other government infrastructures. However, there are no reports of fatalities or injuries.
“They arrived in the morning at around 09:00, opening fire, and shortly afterward, they burned down the police station, the administration building, and other government infrastructure. To this day, no one knows whether there were any deaths because the entire population abandoned the village”, a source said.
As a result of the attack, many people fled to the district headquarters, which is now home to thousands of displaced people from several villages. The headquarters of the Chiúre Velho administrative post is located less than one hundred kilometers from the city of Pemba, the Cabo Delgado provincial capital.
According to Oliveira Amimo, the Chiúre Velho administrator, the authorities are working to re-establish order in the region. “We have received many people from several surrounding villages, and we are already in contact with humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to these people who truly need urgent help”, he said.
