Africa-Press – Mozambique. Maputo Municipal Council has interrupted the demolition of the ‘Casa Macamo’ building. located in the Ponta Vermelha area of Polana Cimento, for an indefinite period of time pending investigation of the approval and licensing process.
Councillor for Urban Planning, Environment and Construction Idálio Juvane said yesterday that the objective was for all construction in municipal territory to be in accordance with the municipality’s construction and buildings posture and territorial planning instruments.
The Cidadãos de Maputo Facebook page on Monday said that ‘Casa Macamo’ was “one of the many buildings that have been inventoried as potential candidates for the City’s heritage”.
“The Ponta Vermelha Association Group, seeing demolition machines enter the garden of the house at 4:00 am, tried to find out what was happening. All institutions contacted, namely the Neighbourhood Secretariat, the Kampfumo Neighbourhood Administration and Maputo Municipal Council, declared that they did not know what this was about. The Association Group sent a letter to all the institutions and, after receiving no response, noted that demolition began today, June 3rd,” the post reads.
The same source says that successive municipal administrations have allowed the destruction of the city’s heritage.
“Despite the multiple observations carried out by citizens and qualified technicians for this purpose, the demolitions of our heritage continue to accumulate,” the Facebook page further details. “In this specific case, the authorities not only do not seem to know what it is about, they also let it take effect without giving any response to the citizens, something that seems to contradict the repeated promises of greater care for the city and its residents.”
