Africa-Press – Mozambique. As of last Sunday (November 28), Macau has banned people from eight African countries from entering the territory, justifying the decision with the threat of the new Omicron coronavirus variant.
The ban affects people travelling from, or who have in the past 21 days visited, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi.
The new variant was recently identified in South Africa and, according to the World Health Organization, its “high number of mutations” may imply greater infectivity.
The vaccination rate in Macau is around 70%. The territory has registered only 77 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic and – with the exception of China – it continues to maintain strong border restrictions, requiring up to 35 days’ quarantines on entry for some travellers.
