Africa-Press – Mozambique. Her Excellency, Carla Alexandra Oreste do Rosário Fernandes Louveira, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Mozambique, launched on Monday the thematic studies resulting from the 2017 Population and Housing Census, in a ceremony held in Maputo. The studies – 17 in total – were produced by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of the Government of Mozambique and utilized the IV Census data to provide in-depth thematic analyses of the characteristics and living conditions of Mozambique’s population.
To increase the availability, understanding, and wide use of Census data for education, policy, planning, and action, the thematic studies distil the 2017 Census data and offer a wealth of insights on key social and economic topics, analyse geographical and social disparities and inequalities and track progress on achievements made on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.
The studies will support the Government, civil society, academia, and other stakeholders to generate evidence-based policy recommendations, as well as plan and monitor development programmes that can result in the greatest improvement for the welfare of the nation’s most vulnerable people.
Each study focuses on a theme, including Mortality, Maternal Mortality, Fertility and Nuptiality, Gender Issues, Youth, Disability, Population Projections, Household and Housing Conditions, Labour Force, Education, Language, Children, Migration and Urbanization, Elderly Population, and Financial Inclusion.
Eliza Ana Monica Magaua, President of INE, in her intervention, challenged the academic community, demographers, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, political scientists, economists, journalists, and other researchers, to use our data as a starting point for the production of monographs, studies, articles, debates, and other relevant information to help planning processes, decision-making, design of public policies and, in this way, contribute to the development of our country.
Walter Mendonça Filho, Officer in Charge of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Mozambique, who provided remarks during the launch ceremony, shared: “UNFPA is honored to support the Government of Mozambique, by working hand-in-hand with INE, to strengthen the use and impact of data for effective policy making. This significant milestone follows the successful dissemination of the 2017 census and reinforces that when data is widely known, understood, and effectively used, it can improve the lives of millions. At the heart of the 2030 agenda is leaving no one behind, and the launch of the thematic studies help the Government to achieve just that by ensuring everyone counts and is counted.”
The realization of the IV Census, as well as the production of the thematic studies, was supported through a multi-year, multi-donor Trust Fund managed by UNFPA, which includes funding and technical support from Canada, the British High Commission, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and UNFPA.
