Africa-PressMozambique. The payment of pensions to around 1,000 ex-Renamo guerrillas demobilised during the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process will resume soon, Ossufo Momade has said.

The payment of pensions was suspended six months ago as a result of lack of funds.

The guarantee of the resumption was given this Thursday by the president of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, at a meeting of party cadres in Marromeu, Sofala province.

The Renamo leader called for calm on the part of the former guerrillas.

“We weren’t following the work they were doing with clarity. They know very well that demobilisation is taking place, and this is not the moment when everything will happen at the same time,” Momade said

“Nobody was left abandoned,” he added. “I met with the American ambassador, who is the vice president of the Contact Group; I met with Mirko Manzoni, who is the Contact Group president, and the answer is positive.”

“They are working with the World Bank and various agencies so that we can have the pensions for our demobilised soldiers,” Momade said.

“They [the demobilised] will have [their pensions], they must hope that this will happen; I am speaking with full responsibility,” he said.

The Renamo leader is in Sofala province monitoring preparations within the party for the next election.
