Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government has paid three months’ worth of the overdue overtime pay owing to resident doctors at Beira Central Hospital (HCB), the largest healthcare facility in the country’s central region.
This led to the suspension of the strike which was scheduled to begin there last Saturday in protest against the delay in overtime payments since 2023.
According to one of the HCB doctors’ representatives, the decision to suspend the strike was made on Friday, after confirmation that payments would begin at around 3:30 p.m..
“Our colleagues, with good sense, decided to call a truce and return to work. We agreed to meet on Monday [today] to review the details and set new negotiation deadlines,” the doctor explained.
According to the same source, the payment only covers three months’ worth of payments owed for 2025, although many doctors are still owed payments dating back to 2023. “It was a vote of confidence. We believe that, based on the information presented and the inspection documents, the government will continue the payment process. For now, we decided to give this credit to the management and maintain dialogue,” he added.
The representative of the HCB resident doctors confirmed that not all professionals received their payments simultaneously. Most received the money on Friday, while some received it on Saturday, and others should be paid this Monday.
“The process [of payment] began late on Friday. Most received it that day, and some colleagues received it on Saturday. We hope that everyone will have received the three months’ payment by Monday,” he stated.
Asked what the next steps would be if the payment is not completed, the source said that any decision will be made at a meeting, where a consensual action plan will be defined.
