Africa-Press – Mozambique. Carlos Machili passed away on Thursday afternoon. He had been hospitalised at the Machava General Hospital, in Maputo province. Professor Machili was 80 years old.

Carlos Machili, was born on May 25, 1942, in Niassa, northern Mozambique. He began his studies in Nampula and, in 1963, moved to the Minor Seminary of the Institute of the Consolata Priests, in Leiria-Fátima, Portugal. He finished his high school in 1965 and began his philosophical training at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He graduated in Philosophy and, in the 1970s, left the Congregation to specialize in Political Science at the University of Rome, with a study on African political institutions.

In Mozambique, Carlos Machili worked in Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, served as Director of Religious Affairs at the Ministry of Justice., was rector of the Pedagogical University of Mozambique and director of the National Atomic Energy Agency (ANEA), among other noteworthy public positions.

He had a passion for Education, was a devoted teacher, a man who dedicated his life to Education.

Machili was a career teacher and one of the forerunners of the National Education System, and a staunch defender of expanding teaching institutions, because, as he often said, quality is found in quantity.

The rector of UP–Maputo Jorge Ferrão says that the death of the Professor is an irreparable loss for the institution and for Mozambique. UP-Maputo mourns his death, said Ferrão.

“We will miss him as will Mozambique. Professor Machili was one of the Professors responsible for expanding Higher Education to the rest of the country. He created the various branches of the Pedagogical University and, surely, we will remember this for the rest of our lives, as we will also remember that he was a great humanist and also that he even collaborated for the liberation of this country in different ways, as a nationalist”, described Jorge Ferrão.

In this moment of pain, mourning and consternation, the rector of the Pedagogical University of Maputo can only express a feeling . “We have a deep feeling of gratitude and our sadness is transformed into positive energy. We want, at this moment, to express all the gratitude we have towards Professor Carlos Machili, not by weeping, but by making the UP continue to tread the right paths, and the most academic paths that our Academy can have,” said Ferrão.
