Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s Electricity Company (EDM) plans to increase its energy exports to neighbouring countries in Southern Africa, announced the administrator for the Business Area of the state company.
“The expectation is that around half of the energy we have will be made available to the region so that we would be talking about around 200 to 250 megawatts,” said Pedro Nguelume, Administrator for the Business Development area at EDM, cited today by the Mozambican media.
According to Nguelume, Mozambique’s electricity grid is due to be extended, among other countries, to Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia as part of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) initiative, and the World Bank is seeking funding for energy transport infrastructures in the region.
“We currently have interconnection projects in various stages and it is impossible to quantify exactly the amount needed to install the entire network,” Nguelume said.
According to EDM, the expansion will allow Mozambique to become a regional hub in the energy sector and enable the country to earn more revenue.
