Embargoed work in Maputo’s Friedrich Engels criminal proceedings opened against former municipal managers – report

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Former managers of the municipality of Maputo must respond in criminal proceedings opened by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) over the licence issued for the construction of a condominium on Avenida Friedrich Engels in Maputo.

The move was announced by Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, in the Assembly of the Republic last week, detailing that the cases were opened at the Central Anti-Corruption Office (GCCC).

According to Buchili, the proceedings were initiated because there was evidence that abuse of position or function had been committed in the process of issuing the construction licence.

The attorney general recalled that, following the work, there was a breech in the embankment and subsidence of the soil towards Avenida da Marginal, a situation worsened by rainfall in February, 2023, which left the road partially impassable.

Due to this, the Public Prosecutor’s Office embargoed the work, and summoned the Municipal Council and the environmental licensing entity to revoke the construction and environmental licences respectively, as not being in accordance with the approved plans and their implementation.

In addition, the owner of the work was obliged to repair the damage.
