Eneas Comiche, a senior member of the Frelimo party, has suspended his mandate in Mozambique’s Assembly of the Republic. Gerson Candeeiro, a substitute deputy from the Maputo City electoral district, has taken over Comiche’s seat. Comiche, who is 86, has held various significant roles in Mozambique’s government, including Minister of Finance and Governor of the Bank of Mozambique.

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Frelimo parliamentary group deputy, Eneas Comiche, has requested the suspension of his mandate in the Assembly of the Republic for an unspecified period.

The information was shared on Wednesday by the President of the Assembly of the Republic (Parliament Speaker), Margarida Talapa, at the opening of the parliamentary session, which discussed and approved, in general and by acclamation, draft laws relating to the media, broadcasting, and the Higher Mass Media Council (CSCS).

This morning, Gerson Candeeiro, a substitute deputy elected by Frelimo in the Maputo City electoral district, assumed the seat previously occupied by Eneas Comiche.

As a member of the X Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic, Comiche is the most senior deputy, at 86 years of age. Over the past 12 months, he also chaired the Parliament’s Planning and Budget Commission.

A respected economist and seasoned politician, Eneas Comiche previously served as Governor of the Bank of Mozambique (1986–1991), Minister of Finance (1991–1994), and President of the Maputo Municipal Council (2004–2008 and 2019–2023), among other leading key positions.

Eneas Comiche has had a long and distinguished career in Mozambique’s political landscape, serving in various high-profile roles since the country’s independence. His experience includes significant positions such as Minister of Finance and Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, which have shaped the nation’s economic policies. The recent suspension of his mandate marks a notable transition in the Assembly of the Republic, reflecting the ongoing changes within the Frelimo party and the broader political environment in Mozambique.
