ENH Plans Direct Operation of National Gas Projects

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH) intends to establish itself as an operator in the oil and gas sector in Mozambique, moving from a mere partner to a leadership position in exploration and production projects.

The approach has been under discussion since Friday in Matutuine district (Ponta do Ouro), Maputo province, in the southern part of the country, by the company’s board members, who are on retreat to develop an ambitious strategic plan for the company.

Currently, ENH is a shareholder in approximately ten hydrocarbon concessions in the country, representing the interests of the Mozambican state and holding stakes ranging from 10% to 40% in the exploration and production value chain.

The company acts as the commercial arm of the state, but project operations are currently in the hands of foreign multinationals such as TotalEnergies (Mozambique LNG – Area 1), ENI (Coral Sul FLNG – Area 4), and ExxonMobil (Rovuma LNG), among others.

Ludovina Bernardo, Chairwoman of ENH’s Board of Directors, argues that this is the right time to take the leap.

“We need to begin positioning ourselves in the oil and gas industry as operators. We want to operate, and if all goes well, we will soon share the results of our first steps in that direction,” she stated.

According to Bernardo, ENH’s new business plan, with a horizon of over five years, foresees the creation of a portfolio of projects to capitalize on the natural gas allocated to the Rovuma Basin projects. These gas reserves represent a strategic opportunity to boost industrial development in the country, with a focus on the supply of domestic gas as a driver of local transformation initiatives and the generation of economic value.

ENH already holds interests in the Pande and Temane Processing Plants in Inhambane province and in gas pipeline projects.

The company also operates as a natural gas aggregator and marketer, with a 65-km pipeline distribution network in Maputo and Marracuene. It plans to participate in the transportation of natural gas, oil, and condensate, both by sea and land, including cross-border initiatives.
