Ethiopians detained for illegal immigration in central Mozambique

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican authorities announced on Tuesday in Beira, in the centre of the country, the arrest of ten Ethiopian citizens for illegal immigration. They were found without any documents in a cargo transport vehicle, allegedly on their way to South Africa.

“Ten Ethiopian citizens and a Mozambican who was transporting them in the truck are being detained,” spokesperson for the National Migration Service (Senami) in Sofala province, Casimiro Matimbe, told journalists.

The arrest of the foreign citizens, aged between 19 and 35, took place during a police inspection in the district of Machanga. They were being transported from neighbouring Malawi.

The group was travelling in a cargo vehicle covered with tarpaulins in the area between the Save River and Muxúnguè when they were detained by the authorities.

“They were going to take the bus to Maputo, from where they could enter the Republic of South Africa,” the person in charge said.

All are accused of the crime of border violation, according to Senami.

The Mozambican authorities recognize that border violation is generally carried out with the complicity of a guide, who charges large amounts to transport foreigners, generally to South Africa and often in cargo vehicles.
