EU – Mozambique Political Dialogue: Commitment to a partnership beyond cooperation

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The EU – Mozambique Political Dialogue discussed the security situation in Europe, particularly the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the war on global food security, and committed to continue working together and stand up for an international rules-based order and a peaceful world.

The 31st Political Dialogue between the Government of Mozambique and the European Union took place on 17th June, in Gaza province, south of the country, with the parties expressing their determination to continue to enhance bilateral partnership for mutual benefit and to developing synergies to face global challenges multilaterally.

The agenda of the Dialogue covered a variety of topics of common interest related to bilateral EU-Mozambique affairs as well as regional and international issues. The meeting took note of the achievements since the last dialogue, held in July 2021, and the latest events in the bilateral links.

Both delegations highlighted the deep and long-standing friendship that connects both sides, based on common values and principles, and underlined the importance of dialogue to exchanging information, fostering mutual understanding and to facilitating priorities and common agendas. The EU delegation saluted Mozambique for the election, for the first time, to join the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.

The EU and Mozambique reviewed the security situation in Cabo Delgado, the Government´s strategy in the province and EU´s integrated response that encompasses security, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation, with reference to EU Military Training Mission in Mozambique. They also assessed the stage of implementation of the 2019 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, to which the EU dedicated over 60 million Euro in support.

As for recent developments in Europe, the Dialogue touched up on the security situation in Europe, particularly the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the war on global food security, and committed to continue working together and stand up for an international rules-based order and a peaceful world.

The EU and Member states delegation made a presentation of EU´s global policies on development and security, namely, the Global Gateway initiative and the Strategic Compass for Security and Defence, highlighting the global benefits and opportunities Mozambique can take advantage of in these two instruments.

The topics of trade an investment, the implementation of the EU – SADC Economic Partnership Agreement and the perspectives for Mozambique joining the African Continental Free Trade Area, which the EU is supporting, were also under discussion.

Looking at current affairs and forward, the two delegations reviewed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the post-Cotonou era. In that field, the EU gave an overview of the new programming for assistance to Mozambique 2021-2027, which priorities are Green Growth; Growth and Youth; and Governance, Peace and a Just Society.

The 31st Political Dialogue was co-chaired by Mozambique´s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Veronica Macamo, leading a delegation of senior Government representatives, and by the EU Ambassador Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, accompanied by European ambassadors and/or representatives of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden.
