Africa-Press – Mozambique. The European Union (EU) has expressed its willingness to strengthen cooperation with Mozambique, taking into account the reforms that the country should carry out in the context of the “inclusive national political dialogue”, which was signed on 5 March by President Daniel Chapo and nine political parties.
The willingness was expressed on Wednesday after a working meeting between Chapo and an EU delegation headed by EU ambassador Antonino Maggiore.
Maggiore told reporters that the meetings Chapo held with the opposition parties, civil society and the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane paved the way for genuine “inclusive national political dialogue” and opened a new page in the country’s history.
The diplomat believed that stabilizing the country is crucial for development, and therefore the EU will continue to support the Mozambican government in its fight against islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
“Modernizing the Mozambican economy is also a priority. We welcome the President’s openness and clear recognition of the problems and challenges facing the country”, said Maggiore. “As part of the reforms underway in the country, the government can count on the EU and its member states, who are fully willing to contribute”.
“We are working with the government and with Mozambican institutions for comprehensive and concrete support, to implement the political commitment to inclusive dialogue” he added. “This support we want to give, not only to the government, but also to civil society, and to leaders of opposition parties”.
“The reform process, including the economy, the electoral legislation, taxation and digitalization are aspects that the European Union considers fundamental to overcoming violence and ensuring that human rights are observed”, he said.
The ambassador claimed that the partnership between EU and Mozambique “is unique, comprehensive, 360 degrees in all areas considered to be priorities for the country. The integrated approach of the EU and its member states is based on support for development, humanitarian aid and security.”
