FATF evaluation expected this Monday

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The result of an assessment by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) of Mozambique’s reforms and progress with a view to removing the country from the creditors’ “grey list” will be known this Monday (02-10).

Mozambique has recently submitted a report detailing actions taken to reverse the country’s presence on the list, the result of it not having complied with requirements relating to the prevention and combating of money laundering and terrorist financing.

The country has already received favourable evaluations from the FATF in January and March of this year.

Quoted by ‘Jornal Notícias’, the Deputy Director of the Financial Information Office of Mozambique (GIFIM), Luís Cezerilo, said that the results achieved so far were encouraging and a boost to expectations of continuing reforms.

“We were in Jordan recently, where we presented the report, of which an evaluation was made. We participated in the face to face discussions, where we agreed on some issues and less on others, but there is a positive expectation,” Cezerilo said.

Cezerilo asserted that all sectors were committed to improvement in matters recommended by the FATF, raising high expectations for Mozambique.

“The government is doing everything it can to fulfil the plan in collaboration with cooperation partners and with all sectors that are involved in this process”, explained the person in charge.

“We will have the FATF’s response on the final result of our discussions on Monday, October 2nd,” Cezerilo said.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) gave Mozambique two years to improve its capacity to prevent and combat money laundering and terrorist financing, starting from October 2022. If it fails, the country could suffer constraints on international financial transactions.
