Africa-Press – Mozambique. Five people died in a head-on collision between a passenger minibus and a truck in Inharime district, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, on Monday, local administrator Elsa Tomo has reported.
Tomo said four people died on the scene and, according to this Tuesday’s edition of the daily ‘Notícias’, one of the 11 seriously injured died later. The driver of the minibus, which overturned, fled the scene.
The accident occurred in the Chongola area near the Závora Crossing, on National Road Number 1 (EN1), according to Tuesday’s edition of Notícias. The IZUZU truck involved was reportedly carrying cargo but was also taking passengers to the village of Sihane, on Závora beach.
Mozambique has a high incidence of road accidents, with internal and international reports routinely citing the country’s roads as among the most dangerous in Africa.
Poor driving, poor vehicle maintenance and the degradation of roads are indicated as the main cause of the high number of road accidents in the country.
