Africa-Press – Mozambique. Four people travelling in a light vehicle died in the early hours of Tuesday during a chase and exchange of gunfire with the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in the city of Maputo.
PRM spokesperson in the country’s capital, Leonel Muchina, told the press that, at around 2:00 a.m., the group disobeyed an order to stop given by a police brigade.
This, said Muchina, excited the suspicion of the agents, who immediately launched a pursuit of the gang, while firing in the air as a way of indicating that they should stop. “Strangely, the group responded with gunfire,” Muchina said.
Given the response, the police directed their fire towards the still-moving vehicle on Avenida Julius Nyerere, close to Praça dos Combatentes, fatally injuring all four occupants.
A search of the vehicle revealed an AKM and an industrial bolt cutter.
Muchina said the bodies were taken to the morgue at Maputo Central Hospital, and that identification was underway prior to informing relatives.
