Africa-Press – Mozambique. Four men were killed today in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, according to reports from the local population and sources on the ground, the third violent incident of its kind in that municipality in less than a month.
According to the reports, the crime took place early in the morning in the centre of Matola, with the bodies of the victims, allegedly shot, left inside a vehicle and on the road.
Lusa attempted to contact the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) about this case, but so far without response.
The PRM confirmed on Wednesday the murder of two police officers, with 54 shots, on the morning of that same day, and the gunshot wounds suffered by a 78-year-old woman, also in Matola, on the outskirts of the Mozambican capital.
“The PRM provincial command in Maputo hereby informs of an aggravated homicide, recorded this morning,” said corporation spokesperson, Cláudio Ngulele.
The crime took place in the Infulene neighbourhood, where a PRM chief inspector and an operational investigation agent from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) “were killed by gunshot”, he added.
According to the Maputo provincial command spokesperson, the victims’ vehicle was blocked by unknown individuals travelling in two vehicles, who, “using AKM-type firearms, fired shots” at the pair.
“According to preliminary data, around 54 shots were fired, resulting in two deaths,” the spokesperson said at the time, adding that there was initially no evidence as to who was responsible.
The first case of this kind also occurred in Matola, on the night of June 11, when an agent from the PRM’s Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) was killed with around 50 shots, in the Nkobe neighbourhood, by three individuals who have not yet been identified.
