Africa-Press – Mozambique. Thousands of members of Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique, marched this Saturday in the city centre of Maputo to salute President Daniel Chapo, highlighting “notable milestones” in the first 100 days of his government.
“Over the course of these 100 days, we have been witnessing a dynamic that consists, above all, of governance focused on results. […] As Mozambicans, we want to encourage this government. […] Even without the approval of the budget, there was work and omelettes were made without eggs,” António Nequice, first secretary of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) in the city of Maputo, told Lusa.
The march began at around 8:30 a.m. at Independence Square. Holding up posters and singing anthems in support of the ruling party in Mozambique, supporters marched along Samora Machel and 25 de Setembro avenues, a distance of almost three kilometres.
The destination of the “red wave”, which covered the two avenues in the centre of Maputo, was the António Repinga Fitness Circuit, where the party had planned other cultural events.
Among the “notable milestones” of the new government’s 100 days in office, supporters of the party that has governed Mozambique since independence highlighted the announcement of the project to revitalise coastal shipping in the country and the management of public accounts in the first months of the year, without approval of the State Budget.
“President Chapo really managed to make omelettes without eggs,” Ilane Chiziane, another Frelimo supporter, told Lusa.
Party members also highlighted efforts to bring about peace, with the signing of an agreement between Chapo and the main opposition parties after months of social unrest due to protests against the results of the general elections of October 9.
“We want to convey the message of peace with this march,” Damasceno Cipriano told Lusa.
“There have been months of demonstrations and many people have been left without jobs.”
