Africa-Press – Mozambique. Tropical Storm ‘Filipo’ could start affecting the province of Maputo from the end of today, after hitting the provinces of Sofala and Inhambane since Monday evening. The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) says the weather system will depart Mozambique on Thursday.
After evolving into a severe tropical storm, ‘Filipo’ is already raising alarm. In Inhambane, where the storm landed, there was destruction of houses, schools, electrical infrastructure and trees.
According to INAM, the system caused heavy rainfall, with more than 150 millimetres in the last 12 to 18 hours.
“The system will continue to evolve, in such a way that it will also move progressively and is already influencing the weather in Gaza province, and this influence will continue over the next 12 and 24 hours,” explained INAM meteorologist Telmo Sumila.
The province of Maputo will see heavy rain from the end of today.
“Nevertheless, we already have some records of very light rain due to the approaching system. In general, what we expect, after this system enters Maputo province, is that it will move to the sea region, leaving over the north of Maputo province and the south of Gaza province from the 14th,” he said.
INAM recommends taking precautionary and safety measures appropriate to strong winds and rain.
