Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Industrial Association of Mozambique (AIMO) participated in the prestigious EU-Mozambique Global Gateway Investment Forum,, which took place in the city of Maputo under the motto “Creating Business Opportunities”. The event brings together business leaders and government authorities from Mozambique and the European Union to discuss the development of industry and manufacturing in Mozambique, with a focus on optimising domestic, regional and global value chains.
In the panel entitled “Industry and Manufacturing: Optimising Domestic, Regional and Global Value Chains”, AIMO was represented by board members Paulo Chibanga from Enserve and Hugo Gomes from CDM (Cervejas de Moçambique], who shed light on critical aspects undermining the continued development of Mozambican industry.
Paulo Chibanga highlighted issues related to the industrialization standard, inter-sectoral connection, industrial expansion and the creation of a sustainable financing line for industries.
Chibanga emphasised the importance of significant investments in infrastructure to overcome these obstacles and boost the sector. “We insist that we can leverage the Mozambican Industry, as it is necessary to review new financing models in addition to issues of quality and workforce certification, there is a need to review the legal framework and its modernization,” he however highlighted.
In another approach, Hugo Gomes stressed that “there is a proliferation of taxes and fees that apply to the industrial sector” and that in his opinion “they are largely part of the biggest challenges of industrial development”. During the panel, Hugo Gomes supported his previous position using as an example the Conformity Assessment Program – PAC, a legislative and normative instrument recently approved by the government, whose mandatory conformity assessment began on the 1st of this month (November 2023).
AIMO’s participation in the EU-Mozambique Global Gateway Investment Forum, was fundamental in highlighting critical issues and sensitising the competent authorities and investors present to the challenges faced by the Mozambican industry.
The association is committed to collaborating with the public and private sectors to overcome the critical aspects that undermine national industrial development, where the emphasis is on the need to improve the legal institutional framework and market environment, type of industry and industrialization model, technology and modernization, financing of the industrial sector with the aim of creating an environment conducive to the growth and sustainable development of industry in Mozambique.
