Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government approved this Tuesday (30), in the Council of Ministers, a decree creating the Palma-Quirimbas Environmental Protection Area in Cabo Delgado province, with the aim of preserving and protecting marine, terrestrial and coastal species and their habitats.

According to a statement, the decree aims to contribute to the restoration of ecological processes, renewal of natural resources and the maintenance of the biological diversity of Palma-Quirimbas.

The decree was issued two weeks after the Minister of Land and Environment revealed that the Quirimbas Biosphere Reserve, located in the province of Cabo Delgado, requires around US$33 million to implement its management and business plan for the 2023-32 period.

Conservation, business and communication are the three components that make up the Quirimbas Biosphere Reserve plan, a strategic tool to coordinate and guide conservation and local development actions, capitalising on opportunities based on the wildlife economy and social and cultural aspects.

Speaking in Cabo Delgado during a fund mobilisation meeting with cooperation partners, Maibaze said that the Quirimbas Biosphere Reserve had an incalculable value for the social and economic development of local communities, and must have a sustainable management that allows not only the preservation of the biodiversity existing in that area, but also the practice of ecotourism activities.

In this Tuesday’s session, the Council of Ministers also approved regulations establishing the functions, organisation and operating regime of the Marine Inspection Operations Coordination Centre (CEFMAR). The regulations aim to enable efficient and effective inspection of maritime space, including navigable, lake and river waters, and the exercise of state authority at sea and inland waters.

In the weekly meeting, the cabinet also approved the draft law establishing the legal framework for the National Health System, to be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic.

The proposed law aims to adapt the National Health System to the complexity and scale of health challenges, combined with the socio-economic situation and demographic and epidemiological transitions in the country, and applies to public, community and private institutions, individuals and communities that carry out activities in the health sector.
