Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government intends to create another criminal investigation unit, as provided for in the proposal to review the police law approved this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers.
This unit will aim to provide the corporation with the capacity to respond to new types of crime, and will be called the Criminal Offences Investigation Branch (RIC). The proposal still has to be approved by the Assembly of the Republic.
“There are new types of crimes being committed and there is a need for the police itself to modernise, matching the level of events already underway and anticipating those that are yet to occur,” Council of Ministers spokesperson Filimão Suaze said at the end of the cabinet’s weekly session.
According to Suaze, the creation of the RIC will not mean the dissolution of the current National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
Suaze pointed out that the document approved on Tuesday stresses the pertinence of a branch of special forces subordinated to unified, vertical command.
According to Suaze, the proposal also aims to reorganise the Traffic Police, providing the structure with the strength appropriate to its responsibilities, in subordination to the general command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique.
