Africa-Press – Mozambique. Nacala Municipality, in collaboration with Grindrod and project partners Mozfit, BlueEvents, FastClean, Seach Logistics and Trans Kalu, launched the Clean Beaches Project on 25 January 2026 at Fernão Veloso Beach. The one-year initiative promotes environmental education, responsible waste management and community action to protect and preserve Nacala’s coastline.

Running for 12 months, the programme will deliver clean-ups twice a month across Fernão Veloso, Sousa, Muzuane and Libelula beaches, complemented by weekend awareness activities delivered in Portuguese and the local Macua language to ensure inclusive engagement and broad community participation.

To strengthen waste collection and reduce coastal pollution, the initiative has installed six eco-bins across three beaches: three at Fernão Veloso, one at Muzuane and two at Sousa. The launch also included 25 trainees who supported community awareness sessions, practical demonstrations and direct engagement with beachgoers.

The programme is supported by local stakeholders, including the Fishermen’s Association and Let’s Do It (environmental association), reinforcing community participation and shared responsibility for environmental stewardship. Implementation is led by Nacala Municipality, ensuring local ownership and long-term sustainability, and the Municipality welcomed the initiative as aligned with environmental preservation and community wellbeing.

“Protecting our coastline takes consistent action and shared responsibility,” said Ozi Honwana, General Manager: Nacala, Grindrod. “We’re proud to support Nacala Municipality and our partners through this one-year programme. It combines clean-ups, awareness and improved waste infrastructure, aligned to our Regenerative Environment ESG goals and SDG 14: Life Below Water.”

The project will continue with weekend awareness activities and twice-weekly waste removal to designated landfills, while the Municipality and participating restaurants at eco-bin sites will support daily cleaning to maintain the eco-points and surrounding areas, ensuring the beaches remain clean, safe and accessible for the community.
