INGD inaugurates weather warning system

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s relief agency, the National Disaster Risk Management Institute (INGD), through the National Emergency Operations Center (CENOE), on Tuesday inaugurated a new weather warning system called “Situation Room.”

The system will help the authorities strengthen their early warning capacity for extreme weather events and respond to the challenges posed by climate change and hydrometeorological phenomena.

According to INGD chairperson, Luísa Meque, the new system will be connected to the African Union (AU) Situation Room, and to the Regional Center for Humanitarian and Emergency Operations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

“This room positions Mozambique at the forefront of regional and continental cooperation through its connection to the multi-hazard early warning and early response system for Africa, promoted by the African Union with support from the United Nations offices for disaster risk reduction”, she said.

The INGD considers the new system an institutional milestone of relevance for the country, especially in monitoring weather events.

“The system symbolizes the determination of the government and its partners to strengthen the national early warning system, equipped with a modern, integrated, and effective instrument capable of responding to the challenges posed by climate change and hydrometeorological phenomena”, she explained.

In recent years, Mozambique has seen a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters. During the 2024-2025 rainy and cyclonic season, the country was affected by tropical cyclones Chido, Dikeledi, and Jude, all category 4 and 3, which struck the northern provinces, already weakened by humanitarian pressure due to terrorist attacks in some districts of Cabo Delgado province.

“The Maputo Situation Room, complemented by a pilot room in Beira, strengthens integration between the national, provincial, and local levels, ensuring greater speed and efficiency in the communication and response chain”, said Meque.
