Africa-Press – Mozambique. The National Institute of Social Security (INSS) has increased the funeral subsidy by 100%, from 5,000 to 10,000 meticais, with effect from December 28, 2022.

The funeral subsidy is a Social Security System benefit paid to help with funeral expenses in the event of the death of beneficiaries (workers) and pensioners.

The funeral subsidy was instituted by Ministerial Diploma no 143/93, of 8 December, and is supported by the Special Workers Fund. It underwent successive adjustments, with the previous increase, to 5,000 meticais, taking place in 2013.

In view of the country’s economic situation, characterized by a general increase in the price of goods and services, a reduction in families’ purchasing power was noted. The recent increase in the funeral subsidy was the subject of a survey of funeral costs at provincial level.

The funeral subsidy, along with the death subsidy and the survivor’s pension, is among the death benefits provided for in article 40 of the Compulsory Social Security Regulation (RSSO), approved by Decree No. 51/2017, of 9 October.

Under the terms of article 46 of the RSSO, the funeral subsidy is attributed following the death of the holders of old-age and disability pensions or reduced pension, or of a beneficiary who, at the time of death, has paid at least three months’ contributions into the Social Security system.
