Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique is to get its first magnetite production and processing plant, an ore of prime importance for the mineral coal, iron and steel industries.

The first stone of the construction project was laid this Friday in Tete province, within the scope of the presidential ‘Industrialise Mozambique’ initiative.

On the occasion, the governor of Tete province, Domingos Viola, explained the importance of the undertaking for the province and for the country in general.

Governor Viola said that the implementation of the magnetite factory by IRC Minerals & Metals LDA represented an ‘added value’, and would improve the business environment and contribute to the development of the province.

The project is expected to create about 150 new jobs.

“The plant’s final product is used to wash [clean] coal, which everyone knows that we, as a province, are rich in”, governor Viola said. “We have coal being exploited in Moatize, in Marara, but we also have other deposits that have not yet been exploited, which means that the final product of this plant will guarantee that the coal processed using this mineral is of high quality, and it can be sold world-wide.”

The enterprise to be built in the village of Catipo, Phanzu locality, located in the Benga administrative post Moatize district, Tete province.

The processing plant will be able to produce 75,000 tons of magnetite a year.
