Jihadists ambush vehicles in Meluco

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Islamist terrorists ambushed three vehicles on Wednesday afternoon, near the village of Nangololo, in Meluco district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Thursday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique”.

The jihadists killed several people (the report did not give an exact number) including a health worker from the Meluco Health Centre, who was travelling in a mini-bus. The attack took place at a crossroads near the village.

Initially, the assailants tried to separate the passengers into groups, according to their religion. But while this separation was going on, some of the passengers managed to escape. In the midst of this confusion, the jihadists released an elderly man, a woman and several other passengers.

In the mini-bus, the raiders stole cash and other property, while in one of the other vehicles they beheaded the owner, and then set his body on fire.

Thanks to intervention by the Mozambican defence and security forces, several of the injured were evacuated to hospitals in the towns of Macomia and Pemba.

The movement of vehicles along the road was interrupted for several hours, and a military escort was then introduced to protect vehicles on the stretch between Macomia town and the bridge over the Montepuez river.
