Africa-Press – Mozambique. Karmol Mozambique in partnership with Maputo Municipality, carried out recently a large-scale mangrove planting initiative along the Katembe coastal area, in Maputo City, planting 5,000 mangrove seedlings across approximately 2 hectares. The initiative marks the launch of the Karmol and Maputo Municipality Forest, symbolising a shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The event was attended by various institutional representatives, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Mozambique, whose presence highlights the international relevance of this initiative and the value of cross-border cooperation on climate and environmental action.
The mangrove species planted Ceriops tagal, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, and Rhizophora mucronata play a vital role in preserving biodiversity, as it is one of the rarest species in the country. It also protects coastal zones and restores ecological balance in the region.
“This is a significant milestone for Karmol, as it brings to life our deep commitment to environmental sustainability in Mozambique. We are truly grateful for the institutional support from the Government, represented here by the Maputo Municipality, whose leadership and vision made this partnership possible. The presence of the Turkish Ambassador is also a strong signal of the international importance we attribute to this project. We believe this forest will serve as a living legacy of cooperation and shared responsibility,” said Cumhur Aksoy, representing KARMOL in Mozambique.
On the occasion, the Turkish ambassador, Ferhat Alkan, praised Karmol’s commitment, as well as that of the Government of Mozambique, to environmental preservation.
“I am proud that a leading Turkish company, Karpowership, is actively supporting this initiative. Their contribution to Mozambique’s energy sector, and now their involvement in environmental conservation efforts, reflects the spirit of responsible partnership that Türkiye stands for” he said. “I commend the Municipality, the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, and all partners for their commitment to sustainability”, he added.
For his part, the Councillor for Urban Planning, Environment and Construction of the Maputo Municipality, Idálio Juvane, representing the local mayor, called for the preservation of this critical ecosystem.
“At times, we notice that some residents go to the mangroves to cut down trees for firewood, while others use them to make chairs and for other purposes. Therefore, we must avoid destroying the mangroves because they contribute to our own lives,” he said, adding that “our appeal is for everyone to help preserve these mangroves through dialogue, raising awareness with our neighbours at home, in the neighbourhood, at school so that we avoid destroying them”.
Karmol remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote ecological restoration and community wellbeing, integrating environmental protection as a core pillar of its global mission
