Lazio secures top spot finish in Europa League table despite 1-0 defeat to Braga

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Italian outfit Lazio secured a top spot finish in the UEFA Europa League, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat away against Portuguese side Braga on Thursday in the final day of the competition’s inaugural league phase.

Braga opened the scoring in the early stages of the first half as club captain and right winger Ricardo Horta skipped away from his marker and put the ball into the back of the net in the sixth minute.

Horta’s first goal of the Europa League season would ultimately determine the result of the game.

Despite obtaining a win, results from other Europa League fixtures saw Braga being knocked out of the competition after finishing the league phase in 25th place.

Lazio meanwhile topped the league phase of the competition with 19 points, which they acquired after getting five wins in their first seven matches.

Roma 2-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

In another Europa League fixture, Lazio’s city rival Roma secured a 2-0 victory against German side Eintracht Frankfurt at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma took the lead with a late first-half goal from Spanish left-back Angelino, who fired in a shot in the 44th minute after arriving unmarked at the German side’s far post, despite a hand from Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

The Italian side’s second goal came in the 69th minute with a finish in off the post by Uzbek forward Eldor Shomurodov, who had replaced Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk just two minutes earlier.

Shomurodov’s finish would determine the result of the game, which saw Roma secure a 15th place finish that sees the Italian side advancing to the knockout phase playoffs of the Europa League.

Meanwhile, the result means a fifth place finish for Frankfurt, which will directly advance to the competition’s Round of 16.
