Africa-Press – Mozambique. The president of Mozambique’s governing party, Frelimo, and head of state of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has announced that the party’s Political Commission will present the list of candidates to succeed him as president of the country to the Central Committee in the coming days.

“The Political Commission will submit the proposals regarding Frelimo’s candidacies for president to the Central Committee as soon as possible, taking into account the electoral calendar,” said Filipe Nyusi, quoting the statutes, in his speech at the close of the two-day third ordinary session of the Central Committee of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), the party that has led the country since independence.

“Frelimo is a sexagenarian, mature party that knows how to conduct its processes of transformation and adaptation to the dynamics of each moment in its history, aware that political processes are not static and should not be seen as previous ones. We hope, as has been decided, that within a few days, this process will reach its conclusion,” he said in his speech at the closing session, which kicked off after 21:00 local time on Sunday, around six hours later than previously announced.

The choice of Frelimo’s candidate for the general elections on 9 October – which include presidential elections, for which the current head of state and party president, Filipe Nyusi, can no longer run – was not initially on the agenda for this meeting, which took place in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, but it became the main topic of debate for the highest body between congresses.

Frelimo’s Political Commission usually meets on Wednesdays, and the list of pre-candidates for president of Mozambique is due to be analysed at an extraordinary session of the Central Committee.

“It became clear during our work that from now on, our main mission is to prepare and organise Frelimo’s and its presidential candidate’s victory in the elections on 9 October 2024. So it was clear that today, we are organising, and we are organising to win […]. Don’t be surprised when we win, and win well,” said Nyusi.

The Frelimo leader congratulated the 254 members of the Central Committee for their “open, frank and in-depth debates, even on points that at first glance seemed quite complex, such as the question of the succession to the presidency of Mozambique”.

“Once again, the comrade members of the Central Committee were able to focus the debate on the general interest without emotion or impatience,” he said.

Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on 9 October, the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.

The current president of Mozambique and Frelimo is constitutionally barred from running again for head of state because he is currently serving his second term as head of state, having been elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.

The Constitutional Council must receive lists of candidates for President of the Republic in the October elections by 10 June.
