Malawi Elections Set Example of Democracy in Africa

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo said the people of Malawi had set an example of democracy for the African continent and the world. He made the remarks in Lilongwe on Saturday, where he was participating in the inauguration of the neighbouring country’s new head of state.

“As everyone knows, we have excellent relations of friendship and cooperation with all neighbouring countries in the SADC [Southern African Development Community] region. We believe that elections were held in Malawi on 16 September, and the Malawian people set an example for the African continent and the world regarding the democratic process. We came here with a message to congratulate the Malawian people,” said President Chapo.

The Mozambican head of state is attending the inauguration ceremony of Peter Mutharika, 85, who served as President of Malawi from 2014 to 2020. Mutharika was elected in the first round with 57% of the vote in the election held on 16 September in Malawi, a country that shares a border with Mozambique.

In his remarks to reporters, President Chapo congratulated the new Head of State of Malawi, reiterating Mozambique’s openness to strengthening cooperation, particularly in the economic sphere, with its neighbour.

“As everyone knows, we want to continue working, above all, beyond the excellent economic, political, and social relationship we have with Malawi. Everyone knows that we have been carrying out a lot of economic diplomacy recently. Therefore, we want to strengthen our trade relations with Malawi and consolidate our economic relations, as everyone who has used our ports knows,” said Chapo.

“We have plans to invest in our development corridor—I’m talking about the Beira and Nacala corridors—so we can increase the logistical capacity of these corridors. This will allow our brothers and sisters to receive goods in a timely manner, which will boost the Malawian economy,” he added.

President Chapo also pledged to continue working on establishing one-stop border posts and advancing investments in dry ports with Malawi and other southern African countries, stating that this is one of the ways to consolidate economic and trade cooperation and promote regional development.

“We want to work to establish this excellent relationship with the Malawian government, because this will consolidate existing relations, but also the friendship and cooperation between the two peoples,” concluded Chapo.
