Maputo cracks down on noise pollution

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Eleven ‘churches’ in the City of Maputo have been fined 10,000 meticais for noise pollution, while municipal police are appealing to religious congregations not to use amplifiers.

The measure arises due to the increase in ‘churches’ that use amplifiers during services carried out at night.

The spokesperson for the Municipal Police in the City of Maputo, Mateus Cuna, held a press conference this Tuesday to talk about the subject and explained that “there is nothing against evangelization actions, but, lately, there is a phenomenon that has emerged and tends to grow, which is the use of instruments which catalyse noise pollution, which is why the municipal stance on the matter advises equipping these buildings with instruments that take into account the acoustic factor, so that the sound does not propagate and bother people who live close to these religious institutions”.

In total, 11 ‘churches’ were fined in two days, most of them located in Nlhamankulu and Kamubukwana municipal districts in the capital.

In addition to these, the Municipal Police has closed the Pulmão and the Agostinho Neto markets, known as the ‘Museu’, due to noise pollution and non-compliance with closing times.

“We also want to draw attention to the noise pollution emitted by vehicles parked near homes or food and beverage establishments, stalls and other similar places. These will be sanctioned with a fine, and the vehicle may be immobilised and removed to the Municipal Police park, in case of refusal to present respective documentation,” Cuna warned.

The fine for noise pollution is 10,000 meticais, rising to 30,000 for repeat offenses.
