Maputo province mapping areas at high risk of cholera outbreak

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Health authorities in Maputo province are mapping the areas with the highest risk of hosting cholera outbreaks, as part of the intensification of surveillance actions against the disease.

The action arises from the fact that the province is at risk of registering cases of cholera, a factor that combines with the ongoing rainy season.

Benedito Sitoe, epidemiological surveillance expert in the provincial Health Directorate in Maputo, explained that the risk stems from ingestion of contaminated water and food.

In the last three weeks, the health sector in Maputo province has reported more than 37,000 cases of diarrhoea associated with the rainy season in the country.
