Matola toll booth becomes “makeshift Chapa terminal”

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Since 9:00 a.m. this Thursday, chapa drivers protesting at their colleagues being arrested by the police have transformed the Matola toll booth into a makeshift terminal, abandoning passengers there and causing difficulties for those who wish to continue their journey.

“The reason for this is that the chapa drivers are demanding the release of their colleagues who were arrested for refusing to pay tolls at the booth,” said Américo Chambane, one of the transporters on the Baixa-Boane route.

Meanwhile, traffic on National Road Number 4 (N4) between Maputo and Matola via the toll booth has been affected since the early hours of this morning.

The situation is connected with the gradual resumption of toll collection, against the wishes of transport operators who refused to pay the toll during the post-election protests.

As a result, thousands of people were obliged to walk to their workplaces on this rainy morning.
