MDM elects Lutero Simango as its presidential candidate

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s second largest opposition party, the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), on Sunday elected its leader, Lutero Simango, as its candidate for the presidential election scheduled for 9 October.

Simango is the brother of Daviz Simango, the founder of the MDM, who died in February 2021. He is President of the MDM and leader of its parliamentary group.

He was chosen as the party’s presidential candidate on Sunday afternoon, on the final day of a meeting of the MDM National Council, held in the central city of Beira. Simango was unopposed -all 80 members of the Council voted for him.

Speaking immediately after the election, Simango thanked the members of the National Council for the trust they had deposited in him.

“It’s an honour and a responsibility”, he said. “And it is a collective challenge of our party to face these elections”.

“Our goal is to win political power through a democratic procedure, and this is going to happen now, on 9 October”, Simango declared.

He called on MDM members to work, as from now, to mobilise voters for the coming electoral battle, in order to ensure that the country will be governed by the MDM.

Simango stressed that the democratic rotation of the party in government “is a necessary condition for change in Mozambique”.
