MDM promises to announce its candidates on Sunday

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s second largest opposition party, the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), has promised that it will announce on Sunday its candidate for the presidential election scheduled for 9 October.

At the same time, the MDM National Council, meeting in the central city of Beira, will announce its candidates for the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, and for provincial governors.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the chairperson of the National Council, Pedro Casimiro, said that the basic condition for any candidate is that he or she must be a Mozambican citizen. “Then we shall assess the condition of each candidate to confront the challenges facing the country”, he added.

“The party intends to challenge the potential candidates to express their intentions, and see if there are any impediments”, Casimiro said. “Then a vote will be taken on the candidates”.

“The Mozambican people need a President with the ability to lead the country and with policies that benefit everybody without exclusion”, he declared. “We want to be able to say that, yes, this candidate will develop the country. We want to embrace people who bring solutions, and not problems”.

But Casimiro, asked by the independent television station STV to name the potential presidential candiates, declined to do so. “I can’t put forward any name”, he said. “The names will come out of the National Council”.

Nonetheless the two most prominent MDM politicians, widely mentioned as the most likely candidates, are the party’s president, Lutero Simango, and the mayor of Beira, Albano Carige.
