Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government is re-verifying the pension payment process for combatants to ensure the legality of each beneficiary. The action is intended to ensure transparency and to eradicate ‘ghost combatants’ who have been receiving pensions improperly.
Minister Nyeleti Mondlane on Wednesday acknowledged that the conduct of those who fabricate ghost pensioners discredits the pension payment system for combatants.
The Minister disclosed no numbers. Instead, Nyeleti Mondlane stressed that the ultimate goal of the re-verification process is to establish the truth, granting combatant pensions to those who deserve them and removing those who are illegally receiving them.
In turn, the Secretary-Genera of the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN) Carlos Siliya, suggested punitive and exemplary measures for those who falsely pose as combatants.
The Minister and the ACCLIN Secretary General were speaking during the opening of the 16th Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Combatants (MICO), a three-day event that began on Wednesday in Macaneta, Maputo province.
The Coordinating Council is expected to present proposals for revising the law that establishes the legal basis for the pursuit, defence, and protection of the rights and duties of veterans of the National Liberation Struggle and of the Combatants in Defence of Sovereignty and Democracy.
