MIREME presents results of the MAGTAP – Mining and Gas Technical Assistance Project

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mining and Gas Technical Assistance Project (MAGTAP) began in 2013 and will end in December of the current year. It responded to the needs of the country to improve knowledge about the potential of mineral and hydrocarbon resources with a view to defining appropriate mechanisms for sustainable exploitation of these resources.

The presentation ceremony was led, on Thursday 13/09, by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Teodoro Vales.

On the occasion, Vales said that in the years 2001 to 2006, a vast programme of regional and High Density Aerogeophysical survey and Geological Mapping on the scales 1:250 000 and 1: 50 000 was carried out, culminating in the publication of various geological and geophysical maps and the creation of a database which allowed for the provision of accurate information on the types of minerals, their location and consequently an increase in mining investment, with greater emphasis on the research and exploitation of natural gas, mineral coal, heavy sands, gold, precious and semi-precious stones.

With this programme it was possible to finance projects covering the hydrocarbon, mining, seismic monitoring and institutional capacity building sectors.

The seminar was attended by staff from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and EnergyMIREME, from subordinate and supervised institutions, representatives of the World Bank, IFAD, consultants and representatives of the Provincial Services for Infrastructure.
