Mobile Operators To Offer Free Emergency Lines Starting 2026

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The three Mozambican mobile network operators will, from January 2026, provide free emergency lines to report crime, road accidents and other social emergencies, it was announced today.

“The emergency lines will allow citizens to have quick, efficient, free and barrier-free access to emergency services in crisis situations, regardless of their location or the telephone operator they use,” reads a note from the Ministry of the Interior.

The project is part of the Ministry of the Interior’s Public Security Management System, which is currently being implemented, and is the result of a memorandum of understanding signed on Tuesday in Maputo with the operators Tmcel, Vodacom and Movitel.

“A memorandum of understanding was signed this Tuesday in Maputo between the Ministry of the Interior (MINT) and the mobile phone companies Tmcel, Vodacom and Movitel, for the operation of Emergency Lines, within the scope of preventing and combating crime, accidents and other social ills,” reads the ministry note.

The memorandum was signed by Victor Canhemba Júnior, Permanent Secretary for the MINT; Mahomad Mussa, Chairman of the Management Committee for Tmcel; Simon Karikari, Chairman of the Executive Committee for Vodacom; and Nguyen Quoc Huy, Deputy General Manager for Movitel.

According to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Victor Canhemba Júnior, the emergency lines should be “operational from January next year”, contributing “significantly to mitigating the harmful impacts of accidents, violence or natural disasters” in Mozambique.

“We know that, in emergency situations, every second counts, whether it is an accident, an incident of violence or a natural disaster. Emergency calls are the first line of connection between the citizen in danger and the institutions responsible for helping them,” Canhemba Júnior explained.
